As one of the shopping center’s original anchor tenants, expert mason and craftsman, Bill Chappell and his wife Avonne opened the doors of The Hearth Shop in 1967, focusing on installation, sales and firescreens for Bill’s custom fireplaces. Having learned his trade from a long family line of “old world” masons, Chappell was known as an expert craftsman in the local area, having done the masonry work on the iconic Lake El Estero bridge in Monterey, Spanish Bay Resort, as well as many other well-known landmarks and private residences throughout the Peninsula. As in the previous generations, Bill’s daughter, Vicki, quickly became intrigued with the family business and had a desire to carry-on her family’s craft. With a natural eye for design and the passion to learn all she could about the fireplace industry, Vicki committed early-on to follow in her father’s footsteps and carry-on her family’s legacy. Upon graduation from college with a degree in graphic design, Vicki was eager to return to the family business. In 1981, she and her husband Tom, a licensed general contractor, purchased The Hearth Shop from her father and mother and have never looked back. Vicki has taken the hands-on training and customer service skills she learned from her father, as well as her passion for design to create a unique, niche resource for contractors, interior designers, homeowners and architects in the area of fireplace design, safety and consultation. Tom, who also owns Warner Construction in Monterey, oversees The Hearth Shop’s fireplace installation and fireplace construction services. The Hearth Shop remains committed to utilizing the finest of materials in the creation of “visual masterpieces” which include firescreens, glass doors, tools, and accessories. The Hearth Shop is also home to an impressive inventory of hard to find, eclectic and collectible Christmas items, as well as unique gifts and seasonal items.
